Character Name: Papyrus
Series: UNDERTALE
Timeline: Post-Death in No Mercy Route
Canon Resource Link: Wikia
Character History:
In the Pacifist/Neutral routes Papyrus is the third major character and 2nd boss in the game that the playable character encounters. Initially, he is described by his brother (Sans) as a human-hunting FANATIC who will stop at nothing to capture a human. When actually introduced, it’s found that this is a true fact, but also that he is… not very good at it. For one, he has never seen a human before so he has no idea what one even looks like, and two… he’s incredibly naive, innocent, and absolutely terrible at making traps or hurting anyone.

As the player progresses and reveals themselves to Papyrus, he is overjoyed and more than willing to put on his best foot forward to ‘capture’ them using an array of puzzles and ‘traps’ (like a frozen plate of inedible spaghetti with a note stating that it is very clearly meant to be a diversion). His goal is to capture the player and become a member of the Royal Guard; the knights that protect the Underground and work beneath the King. When the player solves all of his puzzles with ease, or simply ignores them entirely, he tells them that he can understand why they keep pursuing him. They obviously just want to be his friend and he is more than happy to allow them… but when he remembers that he can’t join the Royal Guard if he doesn’t capture the player, he fights them regardless.

If the player FLIRTS with Papyrus during the battle, he will fluster and tell them that he is a skeleton with high standards, however, if the player replies that they can make spaghetti he exclaims that they meet all of his standards and that they should date later. After he captures them. If the player loses the fight with Papyrus three times he will let them go by saying that he can’t believe they are so weak and that it is only natural they could never defeat him. Afterwards, the player has the choice of offering to be his friend or not, of which Papyrus happily accepts and encourages them to come by his house and have a date with him later. He also proceeds to tell them exactly how to get back to the surface.

When the player goes on a date with Papyrus (or just hangs out if you Insulted him instead of flirting) he gives them his phone number. From then on the character can call him whenever they wish to receive some ‘helpful advice’, which is actually just useless but funny commentary.

Upon entering the Waterfall area, Sans will stop the player to talk to them about Papyrus. He’ll inform them that he’s a good guy who tries incredibly hard to pursue his dreams and that one time he even stood outside the captain of the Royal Guard’s house overnight just to prove himself to her. He also mentions that a flower speaks to him sometimes and that it whispers him words of encouragement, praise, and prophecies of the future and that the player should keep their eyes out for that flower as well.

Once the player returns to Waterfall they soon find Papyrus talking to the captain of the Royal Guard, Undyne. He informs her that while he fought the human valiantly, they escaped, he then tries to encourage her not to go after the human, but quickly pulls back and tells her that he will help her in any way that he can. Soon after he calls the player to ask what they’re wearing and regardless of whether the player lies to him or not, he still tells Undyne the truth. Once the player defeats Undyne, Papyrus asks them to come to her house to hang out with the both of them, saying that he wants the three of them to be great friends.

At the end of the True ending is the next time that Papyrus appears in the game. He arrives with everyone else to stop the player from fighting Asgore and encourages them to stay in the Underground with the new friends they’ve made. When asked how he knew they should all go to the castle he proudly states that ‘a little flower’ told him, said flower appears and captures everyone after that moment with the intent of using their Souls to shatter the barrier that keeps the monsters trapped underground so that he can destroy the Surface as well.

The player eventually wins the battle against the flower (Flowey) and saves Papyrus as well as the other Monsters.

In the No Mercy (Kill Everyone) route, Papyrus is very much the same, though a bit confused and disappointed that the human has no interest in his puzzles at all. He continues to encourage them to give the puzzles and traps a shot, but in the end he gives up. Stating that he wished he’d gotten a human that actually liked puzzles. When the player challenges Papyrus to his boss fight he states that he finds them unsettling, but believes that they have the chance to change for the better. When they continue to approach him (to fight) he asks them if they are offering a hug of peace, which he would gladly accept. Papyrus refuses to fight and the player one-hit-kills him if they attack.

While dying he tells them that he still firmly believes in them and that they still have a chance to be a better person. If the player Spares him (ending their No Mercy route) he tells them that he’s proud of them and that he KNEW they were good deep down and the Neutral route then proceeds as normal, though the Pacifist/True Route will be impossible to get without resetting.

Abilities/Special Powers:
Papyrus is a Monster. In Undertale canon that means that he is made up mostly of Magic, and because of this he doesn’t follow the same rules and physics that humans or other water-based beings do. For example, when he dies he can still speak for a few moments after having his head removed from his body and rather than just being a corpse as a normal dead human would be he simply scatters into dust instead. Monsters are also considered weaker than humans due to the weak power of their SOUL. A simple strong killing intent and desire to harm can easily destroy them completely. As a boss monster, his ‘slightly’ more powerful SOUL may be the only reason that he was able to speak to the player while decapitated before continuing to burst into dust.

Also do to magic ability, he is able to manipulate a human’s soul to ‘be blue’ which weighs it down. It makes the player have to jump to avoid the bones he throws and uses against them.

His attacks vary in speed and height, and he has no issue with throwing a ridiculous amount at the player that seem impossible to dodge. It’s the power of DETERMINATION that is mostly exclusive to humans that allows the player to avoid them. He also throws bones that are blue that are completely useless if the target stands still.

Third-Person Sample:
The Surface is AMAZING!” Papyrus quickly exclaims as he steps up onto the edge of the beach, hands on his boney hips. His eyes fall closed as he breathes in the salty air (despite lacking lungs) and then he turns. Heading back toward the manner with his head held high. No one needed to hear his excitement over all of this… he was finally fulfilling his DREAM! The wind blowing through his hair (that he didn’t have), the sun beaming down hot against his skin (that he also didn’t have)... the only thing missing was a road and a car!

… Well, that, and a friend to share it all with. Deep down he almost felt guilty for being so happy. Undyne was back home, underground, and all of the other monsters were obviously very envious of how well he, The Great Papyrus, was doing. He had nearly everything he wanted here! Amazing food! Fresh air! Grass! ...And allergies, though he wasn’t quite that fond of those. They made the inside of his skull feel heavy and… gooey. A feeling he hated and that reminded him of grease... another thing he hated.

All in all, though, he was surprisingly glad. If he were the one here maybe he could start his OWN Royal Guard! He could be the temporary captain until he found a way to bring Undyne here and then they could be the Royal Guard together like he always wanted! Though the point of the Royal Guard was to protect the King and to hunt down humans and he’d found that he actually quite liked the humans in this ‘Wonderland’... and they lacked a King to protect, too. “Oh, well, I'll worry about that LATER! For now it is time that I, The Great Papyrus, TO GET DOWN TO BUSINESS!!
